In this introduction to silver clay workshop, you will master the basic techniques to get you started on your metal clay journey.

Rather than a project-based tutorial, I will teach you the basic techniques you need to start working with silver clay, for you to apply to your own designs.

Techniques covered:

Learn how to get an even thickness on your 2d pieces, how to add textures and shapes
Learn how to use pre- made moulds and how to make your own with things like shells or buttons, to turn your found treasures into pure silver
What to do if things break before firing
How to rehydrate your clay when it is getting too dry to work with
How to refine your pieces to get a professional finish
Different drying, firing and finishing techniques

7g 999 fine silver clay (I use Art Clay Silver)
Couple of small pots or little squirty bottles for water
Paintbrush
Toothpick (for hole making/sanding)

Two-part silligum Moulding compound
Something to mould (button, shell etc.)
Textures (Fabric and wallpaper samples are great free options,)
Mini cutters (such as ones used for polymer clay)

Whimsical Batik Floral Earrings

Batik Tulis is hand-drawn batik, known for its big floral designs and bold colours. In this workshop, make a pair of floral earrings inspired by the distinctive floral motifs of Batik Tulis. Discover how easy it is to make intricate Batik flowers using metal clay, and at the same time make the mirror copy to complete a pair of earrings. Use the most basic tools to cut and shape the petals and let your fingers (and imagination) do the rest. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience.

Learn how to make intricately shaped flower petals using only oval shaped cutters.

This technique is ideal for making symmetrical shapes, especially for earrings where the designs are mirror image.

After working in several mediums, I discovered metal clay in 2009 and it quickly
became my passion! I allow myself to follow many paths with my art. Each
piece is carefully designed and crafted.

I became a certified Art Clay Instructor in 2010, a Senior Instructor in 2012 and
a Hadar Jacobson Accredited Instructor in 2014.

I was juried into the Metal Arts Guild of N.S. in 2010 and Craft Nova Scotia in
2011, in conjunction with the Metal Arts Guild of N.S., and as a solo artist in
2019.

I’ve taught at the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, Halifax Bead &
Metal Clay and from my two studios, as well as travelling to teach.

I was a presenter at SINTER22, an Alliance for Metal Clay Arts Worldwide,
(AMCAW) conference, in Pittsburgh in 2022, and at SINTER24 in England.

Annemarie Klappe is a Metal Clay Teacher & Artist from the Netherlands. She lives and works in an historic monument build around 1640. I was inspired to take this journey by my early frustration with making unique pieces. I have been working for a little over a year on developing these unique techniques for creating simple yet elegant stamps and complex multi-level molds .

I will teach many different methods and lots of types of mark-making so each student’s molds will be different and. The beauty of creating a mold/stamp that gives you a multi-level design is the construction is a breeze, and you can quickly make additional pieces. I will teach you how to make molds appropriate for light earrings and larger molds for enameling and resin. You can also design a jewelry set.

New techniques in Powder coating

I have developed a new powder coating workshop using inexpensive blanks as a base. This will simplify the learning process. I will be focusing on the following creating and adding metal inclusions and a sparkle additive.

Achieving painterly techniques on metal, creating lace effects and some doodling and holiday ideas. Our final project will be transforming an old piece you find uninspired into a beautiful piece by adding color or customizing one of the extra blanks in your kit.

We will be using a heat gun and torch stand to speed up the powder coating process.

Let’s Sea: Embellished Prong Settings

Go beyond the bezel with these embellished prong settings for oddly shaped stones, sea glass or found objects. If you’ve struggled with how to set unusual objects, this is the class you need. Tell your own story with your choice of prong shapes. We’ll explore how to account for shrinkage, design considerations when working with non-fireable stones, and ways to make embellished or themed prongs. This piece must be kiln fired for two hours, so students will do their firing and final setting and finishing after class. Pat will demonstrate these steps during class.

Techniques covered:

learn to make molds for investment place-holders for oddly shaped stones
proper placement of prongs to allow for shrinkage
different ways to create enhanced prongs
adding an extruded edging and setting the stone after firing
designing complementary backs and bails to complete the jewelry piece.
discussion of final polishing, including the optional use of a flex shaft or rotary tool with polishing bits.

Pat Evans has been making jewelry most of her life, but it was only when she discovered silver metal clay in 2006 that jewelry making became a passion. Pat is a Senior Art Clay instructor and owner of Creator Haven LLC in Watsonville, CA. Pat has taught nationally at Bead Fest, Pasadena Bead and Design, and other venues. She teaches locally at Creator Haven and offers classes through the Cabrillo College Extension.

A former editor of Metal Clay Today magazine, Pat’s work has also been published in Lark Books’ Beading with Pearls, Metal Clay Artist Magazine, Art Clay Society Quarterly, Fired Arts and Crafts, and Metal Clay Today.

Pat is an Art Clay Senior Instructor and is certified by PMC and PMCC. Pat is President of Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild. Pat uses her hobbies of travel and photography to inspire her artwork.

This class pairs together two wonderful mediums, polymer clay and silver clay. In this class you will learn how to create a hollow silver clay focal bead which you fill with polymer clay. You will combine your focal bead with a hand made silver chain and clasp to finish off the piece.

Create a beautiful five piece hinged cuff featuring an organic foldforming technique in silver clay. Learn to construct the perfect champleve frame for enameling, then learn the intricate steps of adding cloisonne wire and colored glass for a stunning multi-technique piece. This class is for students with an advanced understanding of metal clay. Prior to class, students will receive detailed instructions on how to complete their metal clay frame. The frame must be completed prior to the class. We will be discussing the instructions for the frame and answering questions at the beginning of day 1. Day 1 students will learn wire bending techniques, attaching wires, enamel washing and the start of their color inlay. Day 2 will be the completion of the color inlay and a detailed description of finishing techniques from grinding to polish. This is best watched and completed after class.

Terri Hickey is a Cleveland based artist working in Metal Clay & Enamel. She graduated from the University of Illinois in fashion manufacturing and worked designing & developing clothing lines for various companies.

In 2009, she was introduced to Metal Clay, fell in love, and began taking classes and workshops from well-known metal clay artists. Her fascination with glass soon led her to explore enamels. Since then, she has worked with some of today’s leading enamel artists.

Terri is involved with the MC community serving as a Board Member, Virtual Guild and LCVA team members for AMCAW. She is the president of the Metal Clay & Jewelry Arts Guild of NE Ohio. She is a certified metal clay instructor from Rio Grande and Art Clay, and a member of the Enamellist Society. Turtle Treasure Box

Turtles symbolize balance and harmony due to their ability to thrive on both land and water. Their shells represent protection and shelter. With their connection to water, turtles are also associated with emotional depth and intuition, navigating the currents of the subconscious mind.

In this workshop, we’ll begin by building the box structure and then move on to sculpting the shell, flippers, and head, creating a realistic sea turtle. We’ll cover techniques such as joining dry clay elements to create a sturdy container, sculpting wet clay, and carving dry clay to add intricate details. Additionally, we’ll work on rolling and cutting clay, creating textures and patterns, sanding and carving greenware, making seamless joins, and molding small elements to place inside your treasure box.

Students will learn how to use polymer clay to sculpt a drying support, create an ovoid-shaped container, make seamless joins, sculpt wet clay and carve dry clay to create appendages, create texture with a needle tool or ball burnisher, join dry clay elements together, and refine greenware.

Married Metals: Creating Mokume-Gane Patterns in Base Metal Clay

In this 2-day workshop, Paula will teach you how to create colorful mokume-gane canes (bullseye or wood-grain) inlaid into bronze. This workshop will be presented using Hadar’s Clays: Fast-Fire Brilliant Bronze, Fast-Fire Copper and Fast-Fire Low Shrinkage Steel XT. You will learn to combine bronze, copper and steel metal clays to create remarkable Mokume-Gane patterns. Paula will share how to prepare and work with the clays, as well as how to use an extruder to create the patterned canes inlaid into bronze base pieces. Particular attention will be paid on how to successfully fire and finish the pieces that help you make a statement!

How to work with Hadar’s Clays including mixing the clays and tips for managing the clays.
Four techniques to create suitable bronze base pieces to hold the mokume-gane canes.

Paula is an Accredited Teacher for Hadar’s Clay and holds PMC and Art Clay certifications. She regularly attends workshops to broaden her skills and has completed coursework with some of the best teachers in metal clay and metalsmithing.

Workshop: A Pop of Gold

A Pop of Gold

In this two day workshop students will design their own brooch, the focus on using syringe to form part of the design. They will learn how to use a syringe and have control over it to be able to add good details.

We will use textures to make the main section. They will find out how to add an embeddable brooch pin to the back of the piece. They will be shown how to refine their piece and get it ready for firing.

Once fired, we will add a highlight to part of the design using 24ct gold leaf by means of Keum-boo. To finish, we will polish the piece and apply a patina, if desired, with a final polish to complete the brooch.

Presenter – Marianne Donohoe, UK

Marianne is an artist and Art Clay senior instructor based in Wiltshire, UK and teaches mainly from her garden studio.

Originally trained as a graphic designer, she worked in IT doing computer aided design. She has an HNC in Scientific & Technical Illustration and works predominantly in watercolours and acrylics. After finding metal clay several years ago, she has gone on to do various diplomas and has been teaching since 2016. She achieved her Higher Diploma in Art Clay and is a certified teacher of both Art Clay and PMC.

She has had several pieces awarded Certificates of Merit in the AMCAW challenges and has been included in a number of the AMCAW calendars. One of her tutorials is in the Creatures and Critters Tutorial Collection on AMCAW. Marianne has taught at MCAS in North Carolina, USA and has had pieces in both the MCAS Expressions and Sinter ’24 exhibitions.

Workshops

Take your skills even further with Metal Clay Live workshops, running May 3–5, 2025. With 26 hands-on sessions led by 21 top metal clay artists, you’ll find options tailored to every skill level—from beginner to advanced. Choose from half-day, full-day, or two-day sessions. Space in live workshops is limited, so reserve your favorites early!

Each live workshop will be recorded, so you can revisit and practice techniques learned during your session at any time. You will also be able to purchase additional workshops after the event. Tickets for recorded access will be available until May 30, 2025, and all recordings will be viewable until July 18, 2025.
