Workshop: Beginner’s Guide to Metal Clay

In this introduction to silver clay workshop, you will master the basic techniques to get you started on your metal clay journey.
Rather than a project-based tutorial, I will teach you the basic techniques you need to start working with silver clay, for you to apply to your own designs.
Techniques covered:
- Learn how to get an even thickness on your 2d pieces, how to add textures and shapes
- Learn how to use pre- made moulds and how to make your own with things like shells or buttons, to turn your found treasures into pure silver
- What to do if things break before firing
- How to rehydrate your clay when it is getting too dry to work with
- How to refine your pieces to get a professional finish
- Different drying, firing and finishing techniques
Skill Level: Beginner
1/2 Day (Saturday 3 May, 2025)
Tools and Materials:
- Basic metal clay tool kit
- 7g 999 fine silver clay (I use Art Clay Silver)
- Couple of small pots or little squirty bottles for water
- Paintbrush
- Toothpick (for hole making/sanding)
- Scalpel/ cutting tool
- Two-part silligum Moulding compound
- Something to mould (button, shell etc.)
- Textures (Fabric and wallpaper samples are great free options,)
- Mini cutters (such as ones used for polymer clay)
- Small Pre-made silicone mould (optional)
- Sanding pads
- Drying equipment such as a portable cup warmer
- Firing equipment, a blow torch & fiber brick or a stainless-steel mesh to place on top of a hob or a kiln
- Wire brush (brass or steel)
- Polishing cloth – (I love pro polishing cloths)
- Liver of Sulphur and hot water if wish to patina
