Presentation: Creator Economy
Presenter: Tes Shea
As an artist, knowing whether you’re making a profit goes beyond simply tracking sales; it requires an understanding of all the costs involved in creating and selling your work. This insight is crucial for ensuring that your pricing covers not only your materials but also your time, overhead, and selling expenses.
Please note, this guidance is not intended as legal or accounting advice. Instead, it aims to provide students with a basic understanding of the factors that go into calculating the cost of producing their artwork. Proper accounting practices or consultation with a financial professional are recommended for detailed financial management.

As an Artist Entrepreneur (Artist-preneur), I’ve been blending art and business since I first discovered metal clay at the 2007 Las Vegas Glass and Bead Show. It ignited a desire to pursue metal clay and art as a business. Once I started working with this remarkable medium, I knew I must learn more about it. Determined to become proficient, I found a certified metal clay instructor, and before long was a Senior Certified Art Clay World Instructor.
With the help of a few friends, we founded an online magazine known as Metal Clay Today (https://metalclaytoday.com/). Fast forward to today, Metal Clay Today is still being produced with Brandy Boyd as the publisher.
This delightful venture has not only honed my metal clay skills but has also given me insights, experience, and proficiency in managing an online business. It’s also given me opportunities to meet and become friends with other artist-preneurs who have shared their love of metal clay and skills in building their businesses.
