The Wide World Of Metal Clays
A bit of science
I will talk about metal clay on a microscopic scale, the ingredients of metal clay and what happens during drying and sintering. I will compare metal clay to sheet metal and look at characteristics such as hardness, density or what makes pieces shiny.
Differences in metal clays
I have worked with more than 40 different clays. In this part I will give an overview of the different metals available and talk about the differences between metals and various brands.
Uses of metal clays
I will give examples of uses for metal clays other than jewellery making. I will give people ideas of what to try.
Trying unknown clays
Based on my scientific training, I will teach people how best to gather new knowledge and how to progress in their metal clay journey.
Testing
I will talk about…

Presenter – Sandra Quell, Luxembourg
Sandra Quell is a physicist and artist from Luxembourg. For many years, science and creativity have complemented and balanced each other in Sandra’s life.
After working with various materials over the years, Sandra discovered metal clay in 2011 and hasn’t looked back since.
Her jewellery work is mainly in silver, while for non-jewellery objects she prefers to work in bronze and copper. Her pieces are one-of-a-kind, often incorporating stones and other materials to tell a different story with each piece.
Sandra is the co-owner of Metalclay-shop.com, which stocks a wide variety of metal clays. This has given her the opportunity to try a multitude of different clays and deepen her understanding of metal clay.
In 2013 Sandra started teaching metal clay classes. Since then hundreds of students have benefited from her expertise.
Over the years she has written several tutorials which have been published both in print and online.
